• ted hughes'ın edebi hayatı sylvia plath ile birlikte başlar. 26 yaşında üniversitede şiir dergisi çıkarırken fulbright bursu ile ingiltereye gelmiş olan plath ile tanışır, bir sene içinde evlenirler, onun ilk şiirlerini derleyip dergilere gönderen de plath'tır. çift amerikaya taşınır, plath yazmak için akademik kariyerinden vazgeçer. çift ingiltereye geri döner, plath çocuklarına bakmak için edebiyattan vaz geçer. evlendikten 7 sene sonra ayrılırlar. plath bir sene sonra intihar eder.
  
  ted hughes çocuklarını yanına alır, bundan sonra uzun süre çocuk şiirleri ve öyküleri yazar, yetişkinler için yazı yazmaz. ilginç ve trajik bir durumdur ki hughes'un sevgilisi assia da bir yaşındaki kızları ile birlikte intihar eder. hughes bir çiftçinin kızıyla evlenir, iran'a gider döner, sonra kendisini yazıya ve çiftçiliğe verip ortadan kaybolur.
  1984'te philip larkin'den poet laureate'liği devralır, bu sıfat altında kraliyetle ilgili şiirlerin yanında çevrecilik temalı şiirler yazar.
  1998'de sylvia plath'la ilgili şiirleri birthday letters adı altında yayınlanır, hughes 35 senedir hakkındaki sessizliğini koruduğu ilk karısına şiirleriyle seslenmektedir. 68 yaşında kanserden ölür.

  as my body sank into the folk-tale
  where the wolves are singing in the forest
  for two babes, who have turned, in their sleep,
