• 20. yuzyilin en onemli media kuramcisidir. gutenberg galaxy ve understanding media isimli iki onemli esere sahiptir. modern cagin iletisim kuramcisi olmasina ragmen, dil ve tarih kulturu cok zengin bir insandir ayriyeten. "the medium is the message" marshall mc luhan'in nerdeyse slogan haline gelmis en unlu sozudur ve bu kavramdan genisce bahseder kitaplarinda. kitle ve iletisim teknolojisi uzerine getirdigi teorilerden dolayi "oracle of the electronic age" (elektronik cagin kahini) olarak unlenmistir. matbaanin kesfinin endustri devriminin baslangici oldugunu one surmesinin yaninda, elektronik kesiflerin insan ve toplum uzerindeki etkilerini daha internet icat olmadan once belirtmistir. bu teknolojik etkilesiminin insan uzerindeki etkisini sadece iletisim araclari acisinda incelemez marshall mcluhan. mesela otomobil ya da tekerlek (arac/medium) insan varliginin bir uzantisidir (the wheel is an extension of the foot) ona gore. otomobil sahibi herkes direksiyon arkasina gectigi zaman o aracla butunlesir. birisi arkadan carptigi zaman herkesin "ulan bana carpti!" diye tepki gostermesi -carpilan arac bir dissal bir nesne, bir otomobil olmasina ragmen- kisinin benliginin otomobil ile ozdeslesmesine ornektir. basit bir dil kullanimiyla bile bu ozdeslik disa vurulur.
