    a prolific composer of operattas, ballets, film music, orchestral and chamber works, isaak dunayevsky was born in 1900 and studied at the kharkov collage of music. in 1937 he was elected 'president of the union of soviet composers at leningrad'. he was one of the first composers in the ussr to use jazz. he was written many patriotic and mass-songs of which the galvanic song of the youth is one.

    born in the ural district in 1911, georgi nosov, of a peasant origin, became interested in music only at the age of 18 when the first radio was installed in his village. for the 20th anniversary of the october revolution, he composed a hymn to lenin for chorus and orchestra.

    ei ukhnem is probably the most widely famous of all russian folk songs. it is a song of old russia: along the banks of the great eiver volga, the bargemen trudge, singing as they haul the barge against the current.

    "happy or sad, my beloved, you are always beautiful. beautiful as a song, as a russian soul! though the northern lights are chill, with you it is warm. our wedding day dawns soon. happiness will be ours. you will be my life's companion, my beloved." composer boris mokrousov, born in nizhny-novgorod in 1909, was a pupil of miaskovsky.

    down the broad street, driving a troika of high-sprited horses, drives the coachman on the way to his beloved. she greets him tenderly, and gives him wine. "and now," says the tipsy coachman, "give me a heartly kiss!"

    it's a long, long way to tipperary was composed by harry j. williams and music-hall entertainer jack judge in 1912, but it was during `world war i that it attained worldwide fame, first as a popular marching song of the britich army and then as an expression of nostalgia for home and loved ones left behind, english-speaking troops on all battlefronts.

    this rollicking dance tune is a russian folk song staple, in the repertoire of every soviet chorus and folk dance company. as the most typical of russian folk instruments, the balalaika is the ideal solo interpreter, and this arrangements calls for true virtuoso playing.

    the beloved folk song annie laurie, filled with oen quaintly indigenous scottish regionalisms, gets a further ethnic coloration as sung here with richly russian accents by tenor belayaev and the full soviet army chorus.

    "soviet soldiers ride through the green plains of their beloved land, singing joyfully. all is peacefull, and the people work happily for their homeland's future."

    in the ukranian folk song, the singer praises his beloved as he strums his bandura (a ukrainian three-stringed, lute like folk instrument). day brings him no joy and night no repose, for his love in unrequited.

    oh no! john!
    the long-cherished old english song is about the maiden who answers "no, john no!" to alll her lover's pleas to marry him. when at last he concludes that all his efforts are unavailing and will never obtain her consent, he asks her, "madam, since you are so cruel and scorn me so, if i am never to be your lover, madam, will you let me go?" to which the lady replies, "oh, no joch, no john, no!"

    this wll-knoen folk song describes a young girl walking in the snoe. a youg man, following her, cries out in a torment of desire, "wait awhile, stand still, my pretty one, and let me look at you! your beauty has driven me crazy!"

    ukrainian poem (kolychev - alexandrov)

    this rousing, longer work recounts how in 1942 all of the ukraine was under german occupation. ancient kiev adn dnieper river were cut off from the rest of the country. then the soviet army attacked, driving off the enemy and liberating towns and villages, where they were welcomed with joy by the population. the music's composer anatol alexandrov, born in the moskkow in 1888, wa a pupil of taniev.

    soldier's chorus from "the decembrists" (shaporin)
    this is the opera, the decembrists, first performed at the bolshoi theater in december, 1953. the title alludes to the first russian revolutionaries who, on december 14, 1825, initiated an unsuccesful uprising against the czarist regime. yuri shaporin, an outstanding soviet composer, was born in ukraine in 1899.
