  genel olarak how come birisinin öne sürdüğü bir argümana ters nitelik taşıyan şeylerde "o zaman nasıl oluyor da bu böyle oluyor" benzeri anlam vermek için kullanılır.
  örnek olarak diyelim ki a ve b kişisi konuşuyor. a kişisi tüm ferrari'lerin kırmızı olduğunu öne sürdü, ama b kişisi de tam o sırada yanlarına yaklaşmakta olan sarı bir ferrari gördü. şöyle bir diyalog gelişebilir aralarında.
  
  a: bütün ferrariler kırmızıdır.
  b: nasıl oluyor da şu an sarı bir ferrari bize doğru yaklaşıyor?
  
  eğer b'nin cevabında "nasıl oluyor da" yerine neden koysaydık, "neden şu an sarı bir ferrari bize doğru yaklaşıyor" diyecektik ve o zaman b kişisi aslında ferrari'nin neden onlara yaklaştığını sormuş olacaktı anlamsal olarak. oysa onun söylemek istediği o değildir. ayrıca "how come" daha çok cevap beklenmeyen, karşı argümanı çürütmek için kurulan cümlelerde kullanılır bu da doğrudur. neden ise bir olayın nedenini öğrenmek için kullanılır ve genelde cevap beklenir.
