  eserin kahramanı wenceslas, ya da literatürdeki yaygın adıyla i. wenceslaus, aslında kral değil bohemya düküydü ve saltanatı 921-929/935 yılları arasındaydı. doğu frank (ya da alman) kralı i. heinrich'in wenceslas'ın tecrübesizliğinden faydalanıp bohemya'yı işgal etmesi sonrası teslim olmuş ve haraç ödemeye razı gelmişti. wenceslas'ın heinrich'e direnmemesi ülkesinde problem oluşturmuş ve kardeşinin de dahil olduğu bir komplo sonucu suikaste uğrayarak yaşamını yitirmişti.
  
  ölümünden hemen sonra şehit ve aziz ilan edildi ve wenceslas kültü bohemya'nın yanı sıra, bilinen herhangi bir bağı olmamasına rağmen ingiltere'de de kısa sürede yaygınlaştı. şarkının sözleri ise 19. yüzyılda ilahi yazarı john mason neale'ın bir çek şiirini ingilizceye tercüme etmesiyle ortaya çıktı.
