• " when eric clapton, that most formal of strolling players, undertook to celebrate his music at the royal albert hall over 24 nights with first a four-piece band and then a nine-piece and then a batch of blues giants and finally a mighty orchestra, it seemed fitting, appropriate, right.
  
  i was at the albert hall during the rehearsal while the great building was being prepared for its first audience for the nine-piece and i was there on the final night with thousands of other celebrants packed to high galleries. each time , i was first subdued by the shining glory of the place, then warmed by its familiarity for in these days of wider still and wider use of the hall and with television dropping in and out , don't we all know the albert hall as an old and dear friend ?
  
  after the final concert , eric was himself linked to the hall's origins in a symbolic presentation of the original key to second tier box 77 (though not the box itself ) which had first been presented to the trustees of the great exhibition of 1851 which older readers of these notes will recall was a most creative idea of prince albert himself.
  
  it showed a populace far dimmer than today's how science and art could help industry.it made a profit, funded the victoria and albert museum and bought land for decent buildings.
  
  so today eric clapton is linked with those endeavours by the symbolic key and by his own practical sense of the artistic and a fairly unrelenting insistence on excellence. a most civilised man with as inquiring a mind as prince albert.
  
  making the presentation, the hall's chief executive patrick deuchar said : " we have had many stars at he albert hall . eric is the star. " that's it . that puts the tin lid on it . "
