• rousseau'ya göre insan özünde iyidir. ama bu özel mülkiyet denen şey, onu kötü kılmış, eşitsizliğe, bencilliğe itmiştir. zira neticede az sayıda insan mevcut mülkün çoğuna sahip olmuş, insan bu sosyopolitik çevrede kötü hale gelmiştir. (yani, bir bakıma, rousseau'ya göre insan aslında iyi de, çevresi kötü...)
  
  bu noktada ister istemez, "peki bu iyi olan insanın çevresindekiler de insan değil mi?" sorusu akla geliyor. bu çelişkiyi çözümlemenin yolu, kötü olanın, mülkün çoğuna sahip olan az sayıdaki insan olduğunu, bu kimselerin çoğunluğu da kötü kıldıklarını iddia etmekten geçiyor - ki zaten buradan da sermaye düşmanlığına varıyoruz.   devlet, kollektivizm ve bireysel haklar konusundaki düşünceleri hakkında ise, şu ibretlik sözleri bir fikir verebilir:
  
  "the man who would preserve his life at the expense of the lives of others ought in turn to expose his own for their protection when it is necessary. the citizen is not a judge of the peril to which the law may expose him; and when the prince says to him, “ıt is expedient for the state that thou shouldst die,” he ought to die, because it is only that condition that he has enjoyed his security up to that moment, and because his life is not to be considered simply as the boon of nature, but as a conditional gift from the state."
