down by the river

pulp'ın şöhret öncesi çıkardığı separations albümünden eski ve nefis bir şarkı. nitekim count down [1992-1983] isimli best of'larına da dahil etmişlerdir.
nadadum dadadada dada da...
take me down
to the river
where i would not go before
through the trees and the rushes
to a place we both know
and i'm feeling much younger
as i kneel on the ground
dip my toe in the water
of the river where i watched you drown
...
böyle gider. -

sözleri biraz where the wild roses grow*'i çağrıştıran bir güzel neil young parçası. bütün neil young şarkıları gibi güzel telecaster nameleriyle bezenmiştir ki zaten telecaster baba gitardır.
sözlerini ben yazayım da tam olsun bari:
be on my side,
i'll be on your side,
baby
there is no reason
for you to hide
it's so hard for me
staying here all alone
when you could be
taking me for a ride.
yeah, she could drag me
over the rainbow,
send me away
down by the river
i shot my baby
down by the river,
dead, oh, shot her dead.
you take my hand,
i'll take your hand
together we may get away
this much madness
is too much sorrow
it's impossible
to make it today.
yeah, she could drag me
over the rainbow,
send me away
down by the river
i shot my baby
down by the river,
dead, oh, shot her dead.
be on my side,
i'll be on your side,
baby
there is no reason
for you to hide
it's so hard for me
staying here all alone
when you could be
taking me for a ride.
yeah, she could drag me
over the rainbow,
send me away
down by the river
i shot my baby
down by the river,
dead, oh, shot her dead. -
pulp'in down by the river'inin sozleri:
take me down to the river, where i would not go before.
through the trees and the rushes, to the place we both know,
and i’m feeling much younger, as i kneel on the ground,
dip my toe in the water of the river where i watched you drown.
na na na...
oh and the river ran dry that next year
i could not find your body
now i standing here, ready at last,
to dive down and reach you again.
and i long to be with you, now these cold nights have come,
oh i go down to the river, but the river will stop for no one.
though i ask it, it keeps flowing on,
when i ask it, it tells me you’re gone.
la ia ia ia ia... -
pulp'in down by the river'i ile neil young'un down by the river'i karistirilmamali. sozler haliyle jarvis'e aittir.
bununla beraber, bu sarki icin jarvis cocker 1986'da sheffield leadmill'de sahnede soyle buyurmus:
"this is about... you may reject something, and then perhaps about six months later you might think "i wish i hadn't done that," and then you go back to the place where you threw it away, and it's not there any more. sickener." -
jarvis bu sarkidaki olayi cok guzel anlatir. ve de sanki gelecegimi gormus gibi, sonrasinda yaptigi konusmasinda da benzer bir sure vererek beni sasirtmis olan sarki. soyleyecek bisey yok (bkz: when i ask it, it tells me you’re gone)
-
dünyanın en güzel şarkılarından biri değilse ben de bi şey bilmiyorum. o kadar.
nil yang için konuşuyorum elbette. -
dave matthews'ın harika yorumladığı bir başka neil young parçası. tim reynolds ile beraber akustik yorumlardan oluşan "live at radio city" albümünde yer alır.
diğer parça için (bkz: cortez the killer) -
