• kraftwerk'in belki de en felsefi sözlere sahip olan şarkısı. minimalist bir üslupla yarattıkları elektronik müzikleri genelde hep otomasyonu ve makineleşen dünyanın sentetik varoluşunu anlatsa da, bu tekniğin ardında çok daha derin felsefi bir vizyon olduğunu düşünüyorum. tıpkı arvo part'ın tek bir nota ile çok şey anlatması gibi. işte bu şarkı da bu durumun en güzel örneklerinden bir tanesidir. hatta daha açık söylemek gerekirse bu şarkı ontolojik ve fenomenolojik okumalara en açık müzik eserlerinden biridir. şarkının sözlerinde, gerçekliğin görüntüsü, görüntünün gerçekliği ve bir varlığın kendi varlığının değerini başka bir varlıktaki yansımasında keşfetmesi gibi fevkalade derin konular çok basit ifadelerle dile getirilmiştir. şarkının bu sözlerine ek olarak, tekrar eden melodinin şaşırtıcı derecede etkili ve akıcı olması hipnoz etkisi yaratmakta ve şarkının gücünü kat kat artırmaktadır.
  
  özellikle defalarca tekrarlanan 'even the greatest stars ... themselves in the looking glass' cümlesiyle, en görkemli görüntüye sahip olan öznenin bile kendisini ancak aynadaki yansımasıyla görüp tanıyabileceği ve bu yansımanın bozulması halinde (yani suddenly the picture was distorted cümlesiyle ifade edilen durumdaki) öznenin kendi varoluş nesnesine yabancılaşabileceği fikri dramatize edilmiştir. hakkında sayfalarca ontolojik yorum yapılabilecek düşünceleri, çok basit sözcükler ve yine son derece minimal notalar aracılığıyla aktarmak büyük bir ustalık. bana göre sadece bu şarkı bile trans-europe express'in neden tüm zamanların en önemli albümleri arasında sayıldığını açıklıyor.
