• khuzdul dilinde karşılığı "cüce konakları" dır. birinci durin tarafından oyulan ve durin halkı nın anayurdu olan puslu dağlar daki büyük mağaralar birinci çağ ın sonunda nogrod ve belegost gibi kentlerin yıkılmasından sonra bu mağaradaki nüfus daha da büyüdü. ikinci çağ ın başında, mithril adlı bir metal keşfedildi; durin halkı yla eregion lu noldor arasında dostluk gelişti. elf ve sauron savaşları boyunca khazad-dum un kapıları kapalı kaldı; böylece ikinci çağ da yaşamlarını sürdürebildiler. üçüncü çağ da mithril madenlerini büyütmeye çalışırken yeraltında mahkum olan bir balrog sebest kaldı ve iki krallarını öldürmesinden sonra cüceler kaçtı. bölge artık moria diye anılmaya başlayacaktı. zamanla sauron , orkları burada topladı, onların cüce kralı thror u katletmesi üzerine cüce ve ork savaşları başladı. savaşlar cücelerin zaferiyle sonuçlandı ama balrog yüzünden moria ele geçirilemedi. erebor da yeniden bir cüce krallığının kurulmasının ardından balin liderliğindeki bir grup khazad-dum a dönerek burada krallığı tekrar kurmaya çalışacak ama başaramayacaktı. 3018 yılında gandalf , balrog u öldürmeyi başarsa da dördüncü çağ da cücelerin bölgeye tekrar yerleşmesi hakkında bir bilgi yoktur. balin dışındaki khazad-dum kralları aynı zamanda durin halkı krallarıydı. khazad-dum westron da cücegazuv, sindarin de hadhodrond , kara çukur ve kara uçurum diye de anılır.
• geçişlerde ücret alınmayan köprüdür. yüzük kardeşliğinin köprüden geçerken orta dünyanın azılı şeytanlarından balroga yakalandığı dipsiz köprüdür. gandalf köprüde balrogu durdurmuş ancak balrog tam aşağıya düşerken gel lan gandalf tek başıma çekilmez o yol beraber takılalım diyerek gandalfıda beraberinde götürmüştür. kitaba göre kuyunun sonu yoktur ancak ne hikmetse gandalfla balrog düşe düşe dünyanın en üst yerine düşmüşlerdir. bazı yerlerde köprünün mimar sinan tarafından yapıldığı yapılırkende tezek kullanıldığı söylenmektedir.(u: gvb)
